Who Won the Debate? Florida Candidates Bask in Sunny Reviews

The Republican primary debate on Saturday night was perhaps the most contentious face-off of the 2016 campaign, as the candidates shouted at, accused and insulted each other, while enduring frequent booing from the audience. Critics and commentators thought the night was won by Jeb Bush, a former governor of Florida, who delivered a strong performance just a week before the South Carolina primary, and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida, who bounced back from his flop at last week’s debate. As for the losers, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas was seen as flat at times under the heat of ad hominem attacks, while Donald J. Trump’s tirades appeared to be wearing thin. Here is a sampling of comments from the chattering class.

“Jeb Bush had his best, most relaxed debate. He managed to get under Donald Trump’s skin, reducing Trump to blaming George W. Bush for 9/11.” — Jennifer Rubin, writer for the Washington Post’s “Right Turn” blog

(CNN)The Republican debate in South Carolina Saturday on night was far below what I'd hoped for as a debate coach, so the grades generally reflected that this time. It's like one of those "group projects" where one person in the group is so poor as to bring everyone else down. Sometimes, nobody gets an A.

I'll begin with the best of the lot.

Marco Rubio: Rubio was generally decent (solid in his discussion of child tax-credits, worse on amnesty and immigration and his record in Florida). He had a poor exchange on immigration with Cruz that somehow ended up with Cruz speaking Spanish. It wasn't Rubio's best debate, but since it wasn't the disaster of his last one, where the (now gone) Chris Christie mocked him for repeating himself, people will probably give him too much credit. B minus seems appropriate.

Jason Sudeikis lights up the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game

Jason Sudeikis is known for his comedic wit and quick, snarky comebacks, but little did we know he could ball. The 40-year-old put his hardwood skills on display during the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game. With fiance Olivia Wilde sitting courtside, Sudeikis finished the first half with 11 points.

Sudeikis, born in Farifax, Va. and raised in Kansas, did his best to rally an overmatched Team USA against Team Canada.

Sudeikis wasn’t the only one showing off his skills. Tennis star and Toronto native Milos Raonic threw down a sweet dunk just before halftime.

Sudeikis and Raonic weren’t the only ones having fun. Just check out these two, French fry-loving fans sitting behind ESPN’s Jon Barry and Mark Jones.

Before the game, Canada’s coach–and perhaps the most popular Canadian–received the key to the city of Toronto.

In case you were wondering who the “big short” guy is playing this game, it’s Milwaukee Bucks co-owner and hedge fund manager Marc Lasry, who played collegiately at Clark University in Massachusetts.
